Van Buren Going Back To Ballot With Slightly Altered Building Plan

7/11/14 – 6:02 A.M.
Residents in the Van Buren school district will likely see a building levy on the November ballot. The Courier reports the school board voted to send a 30-year, 6.96 mill bond issue to the county auditor. The issue would raise $28.7 million to build 34 new classrooms and a new gym. The bond issue is seven years shorter than the proposal voters rejected in November. It will also raise about half a million dollars less.
To make the issue work with the building plans, there could be about a 2 percent decrease in the size of the new buildings. The previous levy also would have covered the cost of buying property to build on. The district bought the needed land with permanent improvement funds in December.
