When I first heard this song from Zac Brown Band, I will admit I started to tear up. Their latest song, “My Old Man” written by Zac Brown, Niko Moon, and Ben Simonetti makes you feel the love you have for your dad. Zac Brown wanted to pay tribute to his dad for all the examples he showed towards him. I cry but smile at the memories I have with my dad. We all at one point realize how great an influence they are in our lives.
When you’re a kid, teenager, or young adult you don’t realize it till a light bulb clicks. My dad has always been my protector and cheerleader. Always protected me from the scrapes on to my knee to boys. I always wondered why he displayed his guns in the living room. Even though I’m married and doing fine he always asks me the 5 dad questions making sure I am doing well.
This song shows the special bond you have with you dad, grandpa, uncle, or any male role model. They show you the world in a different way. A way you look at your life and how special it really is. Greatest dad/daughter moment was getting out of town and traveling to New York. We were helping one of my cousins move to the big apple but we would make time doing fun “touristy” things. I remember the moment where my dad had a U-Haul hitched to his truck in the middle of Time Square and me squealing, “look, dad, there is the MTV studio! Hi, Carson Daly!” We both laughed and had a blast.
Songs play a movie in the back of your mind. This song plays that family home video that makes your smile when you hear it. Take a moment to listen to the lyrics and then give your dad a hug or call him to say thank you and that you love him. If you play this during a father/daughter dance get ready to have a few tissues on standby.
