Toledo Zoo Welcomes Back Nuka

(From the Toledo Zoo)

Snow nice to see you again! The Toledo Zoo is excited to welcome polar bear Nuka back to Arctic Encounter.

As part of a collaborative effort within the Polar Bear Population Alliance, Crystal, our beloved 27-year-old female polar bear, has received an important breeding recommendation. In support of this effort, 21-year-old male Nuka has returned to the Toledo Zoo after spending approximately three years at the Detroit Zoo.

This carefully planned move reinforces our commitment to polar bear conservation by supporting the health and genetic diversity of the species. A recent examination by our expert animal care team confirmed that Crystal is in excellent health.

Crystal has successfully raised nine cubs in her lifetime and any cubs born would remain with their mother for approximately two years, consistent with her previous litters. Crystal and Nuka previously welcomed twin cubs, Kallik and Kallu, in 2022. The twins now reside at other AZA organizations.

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Kali, who spent nearly a year at the Toledo Zoo, is settling in at the Detroit Zoo.

Animal care teams at both institutions thoughtfully developed the transition plan to ensure the health and well-being of all bears involved.

Nuka is currently undergoing a gradual acclimation process and will be carefully reintroduced to Crystal under the guidance of Zoo staff.

During this process, bear viewing may vary. Updates will be shared on our social media channels.

Please note: The Zoo is closed through Feb. 1 because of winter weather.
