Adrien Brody Earns World Record For Longest Oscars Speech, Explains Gum-Throwing Moment
Adrien Brody set a new Guinness World Record for the longest Oscars acceptance speech, surpassing Greer Garson’s record of five minutes and 30 seconds from 1943 when she won for Mrs. Miniver. After winning Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist, Brody spoke for five minutes and 40 seconds, disregarding the 45-second limit and requesting that the music to be stopped (a callback to his previous interrupted Oscar win for The Pianist in 2003). But it was something he did on his way to the stage that had people talking yesterday: he threw his chewing gum to his girlfriend, Georgina Chapman. Fans were disgusted with Brody, but the couple tried to explain on Live With Kelly & Mark. “I could’ve swallowed it, but I didn’t think about that,” Brody said. “I had to get rid of it somehow.” But Chapman admitted that she didn’t actually catch the gum.
