Students Observe Mock Crash At Hancock County Fairgrounds
(From the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office)
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office Y.I.E.L.D. (Young Individuals Educating Local Drivers) Program held a realistic emergency response simulation for Hancock County students at the Hancock County Fairgrounds on Friday.
The purpose of the event was to provide an informational and educational experience for young drivers by raising awareness of the dangers associated with unsafe driving habits, particularly distracted and impaired driving. Held in advance of prom and graduation season, the program is intended to encourage students to make responsible choices and better understand the life-altering consequences that can result from a single poor decision behind the wheel.
The mock crash simulation featured student actors and active participation from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Allen Township Fire Department, and HANCO EMS. The scenario portrayed the real-life consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as well as distracted driving behaviors such as texting while driving.
Students observed a full emergency response, including vehicle extrication, medical treatment, and a fatality scenario. The demonstration was designed to create a lasting impact and reinforce the importance of safe, responsible driving.
Because of the serious and emotional nature of the event, parents and community members were advised that the simulation may appear graphic. The area was secured, all safety precautions were in place, and counselors from the Family Resource Center were available on site to assist any student or other attendees who may have had an emotional response to the presentation.
